When is New Year?
New Year's Day is 1 January. The countdown above runs to midnight in your own time zone, so it's ready for the big moment.
Countries welcome the new year at different times. Kiribati and parts of New Zealand are among the first, while American Samoa and Baker Island are among the last, about 26 hours later.
Who celebrates first?
The new year arrives first in Kiribati's Line Islands in the Pacific, then New Zealand. Sydney is one of the first major cities to celebrate, and its harbour fireworks are broadcast around the world. The last inhabited places to reach midnight are American Samoa and Niue, about 25 hours after Kiribati.
Traditions
In Scotland, Hogmanay is one of the biggest celebrations of the year, and "first footing", being the first visitor to a home after midnight, is said to bring luck. In Spain, people eat twelve grapes, one on each chime of midnight. In Japan, temple bells ring 108 times.
Lunar New Year is a different celebration, following the lunar calendar. It falls between late January and mid-February and is the most important holiday in China, Vietnam, Korea and many other countries.
Making resolutions stick
Resolutions work best when they're specific and small. "Walk 20 minutes after lunch" is easier to keep than "get fit". Tracking a habit with a simple counter, or setting a countdown to a goal date, helps keep it going past the end of January.
