How to calculate GST
Adding GST: multiply the price by 1.1 in Australia (10%) or 1.15 in New Zealand (15%). A $100 item becomes $110 in Australia.
Removing GST: to find the GST included in a total, divide by 11 in Australia, so $110 contains $10 GST. In New Zealand, multiply the total by 3 and divide by 23, so $115 contains $15 GST. Don't simply take 10% off a GST-inclusive price: that gives the wrong answer.
Who needs to register for GST?
In Australia, businesses must register once their annual GST turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits), and ride-share drivers must register regardless. Check the Australian Taxation Office for current thresholds and rules.

Questions people ask
How do I work out GST from a total?
In Australia, divide the GST-inclusive total by 11. For $220, the GST is $20 and the price before GST is $200.
Why isn't GST just 10% of the total?
Because the total already includes the GST. 10% of $110 is $11, but the GST in $110 is only $10, which is 1/11 of the total.
What is the GST rate in New Zealand?
New Zealand GST is 15%. To remove it from a total, multiply by 3 and divide by 23.
Can I use this for VAT or sales tax?
