How to use the hours calculator
Enter a start and finish time for each shift and any unpaid break in minutes. Each row shows the hours worked, and the total for the week appears below in hours and minutes and as a decimal, the format timesheets and payroll systems usually ask for.
Shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically: if the finish time is earlier than the start, the calculator counts it as finishing the next day. Your shifts are saved in your browser so they're still here when you come back later in the week.
Minutes to decimal hours
5 minutes is 0.08 hours, 10 minutes is 0.17, 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 minutes is 0.33, 30 minutes is 0.5, 40 minutes is 0.67 and 45 minutes is 0.75.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. For 9:00 am to 5:30 pm with a 30 minute break, that's 8 hours 30 minutes minus 30 minutes, which is 8 hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, which is the figure most payroll systems use.
Does it work for night shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ran past midnight and adds the hours correctly.
Can it calculate my pay?
Yes. Enter your hourly rate and the total pay updates automatically. It doesn't include overtime rates, tax or penalty rates, which vary by employer and country.
