How much should I tip?

In the US, 15 to 20% is the usual range for sit-down restaurants, with 18 to 20% now common for good service. Bartenders often get $1 to $2 a drink, and delivery drivers 10 to 15% or a few dollars.

Customs differ around the world. In Australia and New Zealand, staff are paid a full minimum wage, so tipping is optional and usually 10% at most for great service. In much of Europe a service charge may already be included, so check the bill before adding more.

Splitting the bill fairly

An even split is simplest. If one person ordered much more, work out their share separately, or use the round-up option so the group covers small differences without fuss.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Move the decimal point one place left to find 10%, then double it. On a $65 bill, 10% is $6.50, so a 20% tip is $13.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, though many people tip on the total for simplicity.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does both and can round each share up.

Do you tip in Australia?

It's not expected. Tipping is optional in Australia, and around 10% is generous for excellent service.
