Valentine's Day around the world
The day is named after Saint Valentine, an early Christian martyr. Its link with romance comes much later, through medieval English and French poets, and by the 1800s exchanging cards had become popular in Britain.
In Japan, women traditionally give chocolate to men on 14 February, and men return the favour a month later on White Day, 14 March. South Korea follows a similar pattern. In Finland and Estonia, the day is more about celebrating friendship than romance.
